Aston Martin’s $100 million offer to Adrian Newey might still be on the table. The Lawrence Stroll-led team attempted to lure the ex-Red CTO away from Ferrari after rumors of Frederic Vasseur’s discussions gaining ground surfaced. However, Ferrari’s latest offer of a 3-year, $105 million contract threatened to seal the deal once and for all. At this junction, AMR’s star driver Fernando Alonso has made one final attempt at grabbing Newey’s attention.

When Adrian Newey was initially linked to an Aston Martin move, Alonso appreciated the “privilege” of having worked in F1 in the same era as “a legend of the sport”. Interestingly, last year, Newey remarked how he rued the missed opportunity of never having designed cars for the 2-time champion. However, 2025 offers them a new opportunity to team up and take Aston Martin to newer heights of greatness. Amid Piero Ferrari’s recent hint at Newey’s Ferrari deal already being finalized, Alonso has expressed great desire to have the technical guru with Aston Martin.

“He (Newey) is a fierce rival, who has helped all the teams to be better, to always look for a better version of ourselves,” Alonso heartily told Mundo Deportivo. Now that it is free, on the market, logically we would all want, or dream, of having that possibility. But well, also reading the rumors or the things that are said, it seems that it is close to Ferrari. So we’ll see. Whatever he decides, he will be welcome, the Spaniard concluded after making Aston Martin’s interest known.

This partnership, if realized, could match the dream team that Ferrari was looking to create with Lewis Hamilton. Since his debut, Alonso has battled against Newey-designed cars, which different drivers drove to multiple wins and world championships. The 42-year-old declares how he will never forget this.

Fernando Alonso ‘blames’ Adrian Newey for F1’s historic rampages

The eras before and after Mercedes’ 7-year dominance belonged to Red Bull. From 2010 to 2013, Sebastian Vettel steered Adrian Newey-designed challengers to dominant victories. Since 2021, Max Verstappen has been doing the same. Unfortunately for Fernando Alonso, turning down RB’s offer in 2009 might’ve been his biggest mistake. It could’ve been him in Vettel’s place driving cars designed by F1’s most successful designer. Alas, he was on the receiving end of Red Bull drivers’ rampage.

The Aston Martin driver was recently questioned on how Newey might be his biggest rival and not other drivers. “Surely, surely,” he replied with a chuckle. “Because in the years when I was at Ferrari, Red Bull was the big dominator, with (Sebastian) Vettel and with (Mark) Webber. Either of them could win you the race. And in this era, the truth is that Verstappen is dominating everyone. So Newey is largely to blame for this, yes.”

Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton are now engaged in a new off-track battle to see which driver from Newey’s work-with-bucket list will be gifted with on-track bragging rights. Can Lawrence Stroll pull off a blinder to do some last-minute snatching from Ferrari’s hands?
