Let us talk about a comeback story. This one features a phoenix from Oviedo, Fernando Alonso, and how his last gamble has beautifully paid off. The man lined up in the first row alongside Sergio Perez for the main race in Miami. While this may seem like a boring repeat of Jeddah, we’ll give you some perspective. The last time Alonso started in the front row was back in 2007 at Indianapolis. But how did the Spaniard finally land up in a team which fit him like a glove?
Former Benetton and Renault team principal Flavio Briatore is Nando’s manager. He has been the Spanish driver’s closest ally through thick and thin. And now he has come forward to accept that he played a major role in Alonso’s move to Aston Martin. He lays out factors that led him to push the matador.
As quoted by Motorsports, Briatore told Italian broadcaster Il Riformista, “[Fernando] is the real surprise of the championship with Aston Martin, which was not competitive until last year. The team managed to get Red Bull number two and then Mercedes number two. They are also investing heavily in the technology base and factory in Silverstone.” He then added, “This is why I forced Fernando to join Aston Martin.”

While the machine plays a very important role, there are places where the driver makes a difference. Fernando, who has always had the reputation of outperforming his car massively, has a decent machine under him. And the man who has already bagged four third places now aims for a higher step of the podium. And his close ally reveals where he can bag it.
Briatore said, “If something unexpected happens, the outcome of the championship is already clear. Red Bull is in a different world, Verstappen has the strength and identity. He already owns the championship. [Red Bull] is going strong because they work better together and they have a real genius like Adrian Newey. Still, some tracks, like Monte Carlo, can lead to big surprises.”
