Red Bull’s closest competitors this season have been Aston Martin and Mercedes. And Max Verstappen‘s major competitor is Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso. Though there is a considerable gap between the teams and drivers, Alonso has been putting pressure on the Dutchman and Red Bull. Ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, AMR Team Principal Mike Krack has said that the team’s “Motto” to “Attack” Red Bull is clear.

As the 2023 season progresses, Verstappen has been extending his lead from Alonso, in the WDC. The points difference between the two might be increasing, but the time gap between their cars is decreasing. The AMR23 has been getting quicker. While in other races, the Red Bull has been a minimum of 20 seconds ahead of any rival, at the end of the Canadian GP, the gap between Verstappen in P1, and Alonso in P2 was only 9.57 seconds.

Krack commented on the same and said that the latest upgrades should close the gap even more. He said, “The latest evolutions seem to work. Now circuits with high-speed corners are coming and I think our car will improve. We are looking forward to Austria, because that is where we will see the true strength of Red Bull. Our motto for Spielberg: Attack.”

As Alonso’s Aston Martin gets closer to Verstappen’s RB19, his optimism should be rising. But unlike his Team Principal’s motto, he believes that the team is far from Red Bull, and victory. In an interview ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, the Spaniard said that their best chance at victory is already in the past.

Alonso said, as quoted by Motorsportweek, “Probably Monaco was, to be honest, in our calendar, our best chance and we were very close: only 40 or 50 milliseconds off pole position, and then in the race, obviously the chance with the weather coming at the end.”
