Fernando Alonso remained critical of Alpine throughout the 2022 season as he suffered several DNFs. The Spaniard has dialed up his attack on his former team since jumping ship to Aston Martin. His latest target is former teammate Esteban Ocon and his career highlight – the 2021 Hungarian GP win.
Despite making progress as a team, the 2022 season remained a dull affair for Alpine and Fernando Alonso. Alonso finished 9th in the drivers’ standings, one behind his teammate with a gap of 11 points between the two. Struggling with the car’s reliability issues, Fernando saw his race end prematurely 6 times.

Fernando Alonso launches an attack on Esteban Ocon
Even when Fernando Alonso managed to finish the races, he complained about the car being undrivable. Alonso never minced his words while taking the team to task on the radio and in press conferences. As he now makes a move to Aston Martin, he continues to be critical of Alpine and his teammate Esteban Ocon.
Comparing the winless 2022 season with the 2021 season, as per GP Fans, Alonso said, “We don’t have the win because what happened in Hungary last year will never happen again in a hundred years, so that is a casualty.”
“And then, the podium, maybe in Canada and Australia we had a chance but we lost by our own fault.”
The Spaniard believed the 2022 season was similar to the 2021 season. “But when you are not fighting for the championship, to be fourth or fifth doesn’t change much,” he added.
The 2021 Hungarian GP remains one of the most strange races F1 fans have ever witnessed. The race started under wet conditions and Valtteri Bottas struggled for grip. The Finnish driver crashed at the start and took out both Red Bulls. While Max Verstappen was able to continue, Sergio Perez wasn’t. The incident saw 5 drivers, including Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, and Lance Stroll bow out.

The race was red-flagged, and before the action could restart, the track dried up significantly. Every driver but Lewis Hamilton came in for slick tires at the end of the formation lap. Hamilton started on the grid alone while every other driver started from the pit lane. As the Briton came in realizing the track was dry, Ocon led the race and finished first to the chequered flag.
Speaking after the race, Ocon said, “what can I say? it’s fantastic. Congrats to Fernando as well, because I think the win is also thanks to him with the fights that he did. It’s teamwork, all that. I think it’s been a fantastic day.”
