During the 2020 Italian Grand Prix qualifying session, there was a massive scramble in the Q1 session. In the final few minutes of the session, several drivers rushed out in order to try and nab a good qualifying slot. Williams F1 driver George Russell was particularly incensed at losing out.

After the drivers bunched up, they all tried to sort themselves out to grab the perfect tow. Unfortunately, the Briton was one of many drivers compromised. He screamed on the radio, “Guys, come on! We need to be the ones capitalising on these f**k-ups, not the ones in the f**k-up!”

Esteban Ocon bore the brunt of a number of insults, particularly from Kimi Raikkonen. Even the Ferrari duo were raging, though they were mad at all the drivers onboard the Ocon Express.

George Russell paid the price, along with several others

The Q1 debacle probably brings back memories of the 2019 Italian Grand Prix qualifying session. That incident took place during the Q3 session and everybody went about holding each other up. Since nobody wanted to overtake and be vulnerable to the slipstream, they slowed each other down.

Unfortunately, they were so focused on getting the tow that they completely forgot about the ticking clock. As a result, the clock wound down to zero and almost 90% of the drivers missed the chequered flag.

At that time, George Russell was not part of last year’s drama, but he was certainly part of it now. The Briton was not the only one who suffered the consequences, of the train of driver. Sebastian Vettel, Nicholas Latifi, Romain Grosjean, and Antonio Giovinazzi also got the short end of the stick.

Meanwhile, Kimi Raikkonen somehow managed to sneak into Q2, in spite of nearly running into the back of Esteban Ocon. This incident also mirrored a similar moment during the Formula 3 qualifying session, where at least 9 drivers were penalised.
