The Monaco GP was an action-packed event from the start. There was chaos in the pit lane following the unexpected rain at the start of the race and, as a result, the race was delayed. As the track dried up, the top 4 gave us a battle to remember, but Fernando Alonso held up the rest of the grid from P7.

It, of course, left the drivers behind him frustrated. Lewis Hamilton in P8 voiced his dissatisfaction on the team radio despite being in the DRS range to overtake Alonso. Further, the train also held up the Spaniard’s teammate, Esteban Ocon, who received a 5-second penalty early in the race.

Overtaking is hard in Monaco, and yesterday’s race captivated it. The drivers stuck behind the Alonso train were seeing each other’s rear wings for most of the race. Moreover, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff called out the two-time world champion for purposely slowing his pace to hold Hamilton.

However, Alonso, who began the race from P7, revealed that he wanted to maintain tire performance. After the race, he said, “We had to do a lot of tyre management. We had some concerns that the yellow tyres [medium] could grain a lot on our car, and the first 10 or 15 laps I took care of the tyres a lot.”

While it annoyed the drivers, the fans certainly enjoyed the Alonso train. They took to Twitter to have their say on the Alpine driver’s performance in Monaco.
