Angela Cullen has been a constant presence with Lewis Hamilton. Angela has been a part of Mercedes since 2016 and has become an integral part of Hamilton’s racing routine. Hamilton often refers to Angela as his close aide and confidante. Being Lewis’s performance coach, Cullen has to ensure that the 7-time champion can stay in peak condition, both physically and mentally. But, who helps her to stay optimistic in life?

Besides her fast-paced F1 life, Angela Cullen has got a nice family too. Cullen, born in New Zealand is married to Silas Cullen, a cycling coach. Even Angela has worked with cyclists before, so there is a good common interest between the couple. As per GPFans.com, she has got two children, a son, and a daughter with Silas, and the entire family lives in the Rhone-Alps region of France.

The Kiwi still mostly spends her time outside of France, owing to the F1 season. For most of the year, Angela is off with Lewis Hamilton to manage his hectic life in F1. Although she ensures she gets to her own hobbies like running and cycling whenever she is free during the season.

She loves to explore every country and city she visits. So, working in F1 is a perfect opportunity for her to fulfill her passion for exploration. Back in 2006, she toured South America while cycling from the southernmost tip of the world to the top of Colombia.

While this is an amazing feat in itself, Angela plans on continuing this tour further one day. Her plan is to cycle all the way to Alaska and all through the rest of the continents. Certainly, she has a great passion for cycling and with her husband being a cycling coach too, she may give a shot at a continental cycle tour someday.

Before working with cyclists, Angela worked with several athletes for the British Olympic team before she joined Mercedes. Her background and loads of credible experience as a performance coach have made her the first woman F1 performance coach.

The Background of Angela Cullen before F1

Cullen has studied health sciences and physiotherapy in Auckland. Until the age of 21, she also played hockey at the international level for New Zealand. Apart from hockey, Angela also had an interest in swimming, football, cricket, basketball, volleyball, and netball.

It was at the English Institute of Sport when she worked with the British Olympians. Her career as a performance coach began here. Angela used to work closely with several sprinters and runners, especially running in the 100m and 200m categories.

Cullen’s work on their overall performance in terms of speed and mobility helped the team win the gold medal in the 2004 Games in Athens. Besides this, Angela also worked back in her home country with the New Zealand Academy of Sport and the High-Performance Sport NZ.

Meanwhile, before taking up the role at Mercedes, the Kiwi worked at Hintsa, a high-performance training institute by Dr. Aki Hintsa. Eventually, she joined the Silver Arrows to become Lewis Hamilton’s performance coach.

Hamilton hails Angela on how positive she keeps him in every situation. She also shares a “Loyalty” tattoo with Lewis. While she may not be meeting her family often; it is certainly the source of her positivity.
