Change is constant, and change is inevitable, but growth is optional. McLaren’s slow growth and unacceptable performances have led to the McLaren CEO initiating changes within the team. While a change was clearly seen coming but such a massive one could not be imagined. Zak Brown has come out explaining the reasons behind an aggressive attempt to save the MCL60 named ship and its successors from drowning.

McLaren’s performance during the 2023 F1 season so far has been subpar. McLaren would still be pointless had it not been for the DNFs at the Australian GP. However, McLaren’s decline in performance started last year during the second half of the season, when McLaren was unable to outperform the surrounding ones. As a result, the executive technical director at McLaren, James Key announced his withdrawal from the team. The British team has since then announced a reshuffle of engineers and signed on of Ferrari’s key personnel.

McLaren already announced that the Former Head of Vehicle concept at Ferrari, David Sanchez will be joining the team later in the year. Zak Brown recently broke the silence about the reshuffle at McLaren and explained the reasons behind it. The McLaren CEO explained how he was not satisfied with McLaren’s development pace last year. The slow development pace carried over to this year as well leaving McLaren looking for answers. Brown suggested that when the performance levels are not met with expectations, decisions to change the course must be taken.

According to motorsport.nextgen-auto.com, Zak Brown said, “In the meantime, under the surface, I was not satisfied with the pace of development of the car. It was in the second half of last year, if you look at the pace of development of some of the other teams, seeing where they started and ended, compared to us.”

Further adding, “But it’s a competitive sport. When you do not reach the level of performance you think you need to reach, you must make decisions to change course. And that’s what we did. And I am confident in the direction we are taking. “

The plan for the reshuffle began back in 2022 only when Andrea Stella joined McLaren. The arrival of Stella gave Zak Brown even more encouragement to discuss the reshuffle with him and the management. Zak Brown also explained his relationship with Stella and how they share everything related to the racing team.

McLaren’s new Team Principal might have taken a page or two out of Aston Martin’s book and is looking at the bigger picture. Instant success might not be possible with such a big reshuffle but is expected to pay dividends in the long run. The Italian recently suggested that he is fully focused on taking Mclaren back to the front. The management has taken a strategic approach toward the reshuffle and is setting a long-term foundation that’ll yield success over multiple years.

According to SkySports.com, Andrea Stella said “I am determined and fully focused on leading McLaren back to the front of the field,” further adding “Since taking on the team principal role I have been given the mandate to take a strategic approach to ensure the team is set on a long-term foundation, for us to build on over the years.”
