Williams has signed up Logan Sargeant, who finished 4th in the 2022 F2 championship. Sargeant, hailing from Florida, has been part of the Williams driver Academy and has impressed the team with his F2 performance.
In a feature interview with his eventual F1 team, Sargeant, in August, told some unknown facts about him. They asked the 21-year-old about some of the race day rituals, to which Sargeant revealed his “underwear” obsession.
Sargeant said, “If [race] weekends are going well, I tend to stick with the same underwear for each day. Before you worry, they’re different pairs! I have a Friday, Saturday, Sunday set. But if it’s not going well, I have to make a change!”
Now sportspersons have loads of such peeves with their undergarments. Often normal people might consider them unhygienic, though a sportsperson may understand the luck and superstitious perspective behind it.
Logan Sargeant ain’t alone in this trend of having superstitions on their race weekends. Many drivers, in fact, world champions, have carried several luck charms or superstitions in their careers.
Rookie Logan Sargeant enters the F1 League of Luck – What are the different lucky charms of F1 drivers?
To start off let’s take the example of racing numbers. F1 drivers are often connected with the story of their chosen racing numbers. Or they might have a solid reason or logic to choose a particular number. And you might be shocked to know Michael Schumacher had a theory of his own.
The 91-time race winner asked for swapping his racing number with Nico Rosberg, as he preferred odd numbers. Schumacher’s reasoning was that he had won all of his world titles racing in an odd-numbered car, five in car #1 and one each in #3 and #5. Even though it’s strange, Mercedes granted his request.
Another German world champion, Sebastian Vettel has also followed his hero Michael on this aspect of charms. Vettel always carried two pieces of shining lucky silver given to him by his grandmother. He wore one of them under his shoelaces on race days.

Besides this, Seb also had a ritual of getting into the car from the same side (mostly the left side). Vettel revealed this back when he was with Ferrari at the 2016 Monaco GP.
So, Logan Sargeant isn’t the first driver to have a weird racing ritual. On his racing number, he has chosen his number to be #2. He mentioned that he would have preferred #3 but Daniel Ricciardo already has that number.
