Ahead of the 2022 season, all eyes were on the Mercedes garage. The team made a new signing in the form of the up-and-coming talent, George Russell, to pair up with their star driver, Lewis Hamilton.
This marked the origin of a British face-off inside the German garage. Both drivers are on opposite ends of their careers. Hamilton is the most accomplished driver in the sport’s history, while Russell is the future of the sport.

However, contrary to expectations, the Brackley outfit has struggled to get on top of the W13 this season. Under the new rules and regulations, the team fell behind in the pecking order. The underperforming package is the thorn in the side of the British drivers who have not contested for a win this season so far.
As the season progresses, the two of them work harder to push the team back to winning ways. Ahead of the French GP, the Brit duo shared a laugh while discussing the weekend ahead. Subsequently, this sent F1 Twitter into meltdown.

The Lewis Hamilton-George Russell battle
With exceptional consistency, the new Mercedes recruit has outscored his teammate in several races this season. It has put the seven-time world champion in the spotlight as he finds himself behind in the driver’s standing.
“Do you need to pinch yourself when you see that you are ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the championship standings?”
George Russell: “No not at all. I'm not here to fight him, we fight for race wins. Lewis is an exceptional driver, what he has achieved is incredible.”

However, earlier in the season, the 24-year-old opined on battling with the F1 superstar. He said, “Obviously, everybody wants to finish ahead of their teammate, but Lewis and I have no interest in battling it out for P5, P6.”
“We want to work together to claw that gap back. So, there’s no hard feelings if he’s ahead of me, there’s no hard feelings if I’m ahead of him, and we’re not too concerned about that at the moment. We have a bigger picture. And the long game we need to play is to catch these guys up because we’re here to win.”
