It was amazing to see cars running close and overtaking each other left, right, and center in 2022. At one point, there was a 5-car battle in Austria. But when it comes to the FIA Action of the Year award, they have to consider all the racing series and the best action from them. Yet the 2022 award was given to Lewis Hamilton for one of his thrilling overtakes.

The overtaking action involved Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez battling for positions on Lap 45 of the British GP. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton was following the duo closely to pick up the pieces. As Perez and Leclerc went off track in the final corner, the Mercedes man swept through to overtake both the cars.

While he lost a position quickly, it was a dramatic piece of racing action. The FIA also nominated some other riveting action in some of the rally car series. The 2nd best action involved Oliver Solberg in the World Rally Championship, who had an absolutely crazy air-borne moment on a dirt track and managed to stay in control of his car, landing safely.

While the 3rd best action as per the FIA was Simone Tempestini’s overtake of Javier Pardo on a narrow track in foggy conditions in the European Rally Car Championship. It was just inhuman.

F1 and motorsport fans are not very pleased with the FIA. They believe, these Rally car actions deserved more recognition than Lewis Hamilton’s pass in Silverstone.

Besides the Action of the Year, Hamilton also won the British Driver of the Year Award by Autosport. It was a similar story among the fans, who thought there were more deserving drivers in the lineup. The 2022 Autosport Awards took place on December 4 at Grosvenor House in London. While Lewis did not attend the ceremony, he sent a video message to address the crowd.

F1 World Erupts over Lewis Hamilton getting the Action of the Year

Several fans have put forth their reactions on social media. While many disagree over Hamilton getting the Action of the Year, there are fans who loved the double overtake.

It surely shows how much the fans care about good racing action across motorsport. Though the Lewis overtake was a cinematic moment with a great audience reception and exciting commentary, it may not be the best racing action.

And to be fair, there were many such great overtakes in the F1 season this year. Besides, the two other rally car moments nominated were damn deserving, especially the narrow track pass on Javier Pardo.

David Croft’s thrilling commentary does work in the moment’s favor, as it became more exciting with the audience cheers at Silverstone. But the FIA needs to clarify whether the Action of the Year is purely judged on racing quality or other factors too.

Either way, Hamilton did not even attend the FIA Gala, for the 2nd year in a row. The Briton might want to attend only if he wins another championship.
