Despite a fresh restructuring of the FIA Race Control, things still don’t look promising, with blunders surfacing repeatedly. Some drivers have even openly criticized and shown discontentment towards Race Control’s procedures. From confusing penalties to not resolving Miami track issues, the Race Directors’ decisions did not settle well with everyone.

F1 Pundit Bemoans improper updates amidst heated Race Control discussions

F1’s renowned face on the grid, Martin Brundle, has now revealed what went on during the Monaco GP. Fans looked over in confusion with no updates of the ongoings amidst a rain delay. Brundle wrote in his Sky Sports F1 column, “A couple of reliable sources tell me that there were heated arguments in Race Control during the impasse as we all looked on unsure of what was happening.

“This presumably explains the periods of inaction and lack of information, and the reason why the Safety Car was not out exploring track conditions as usual.”

Usually, the Race Control relies on safety cars to check on weather and track conditions. However, no scrutiny of the track took place. Moreover, no announcement regarding apparent power issues at the beginning of the race came up. The 45-minute delay with no updates left the fans in confusion and arguably displayed a bad front on the Race Control’s end.

Race Directors attacked from all ends

Previously, two-time world champion Fernando Alonso has also criticized Race Control. After Miami, he even claimed, “Probably the most worrying thing is the race direction and the stewards. With all the changes that have taken place, they haven’t adapted too well and it’s a concern for all the drivers right now.”

Brundle has now even made some suggestions regarding direction improvements. The F1 pundit believes that a proper look into problems is a big priority.

He advised, “The FIA, for the well-being of F1, urgently needs a root and branch change with a fully dedicated and empowered Race Director with at least one understudy, a dedicated circuit and systems inspector, plus an empowered and effective communications department.”
