With seven F1 world titles under his belt, Lewis Hamilton is widely regarded as the GOAT of Formula 1. The man who won his first F1 championship in 2008 and his latest championship in 2020 is undoubtedly one of the greatest ever, if not the GOAT. However, former F1 honcho Bernie Ecclestone doesn’t think so. Ecclestone not only disagrees with Hamilton’s 2008 world championship by robbing Ferrari driver Felipe Massa but also believes the Mercedes driver doesn’t deserve seven F1 world titles.
Talking about this, Ecclestone recently told Next-Gen Auto, “I’m still sorry for Felipe today. He won the final in his home race in Sao Paulo and did everything right. He was stripped of the title he deserved while Hamilton had all the luck of the world and won his first championship.”

The former F1 CEO further tainted Hamilton’s seven F1 world champions legacy as he went on to say, “For me, Michael Schumacher is still the only record holder of seven titles, even if the statistics say otherwise.”
Admittedly, if the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix would have been canceled after the crashgate scandal, Massa would have had more points than Hamilton that year. Since the Briton finished on the podium as compared to the Brazilian’s no point, canceling the GP meant Lewis Hamilton’s season would have ended with 92 points, 5 points shy of Massa.
Ecclestone believes FIA could have changed the 2008 championship outcome
The former F1 honcho Bernie Ecclestone is of the opinion that FIA could have changed the outcome of the 2008 F1 championship later on by canceling the entire Singapore Grand Prix. He said, “We decided not to do anything.”

“We wanted to protect the sport and save it from a huge scandal. That’s why I used my influence to persuade my former driver, Nelson Piquet (the father of the Renault driver involved), and told him to shut up for the time being.”
“At the time, there was a rule that a world championship placing was untouchable after the FIA awards ceremony at the end of the year. So Hamilton got his cup and everything was fine. Case closed,” further asserted the 92-year-old.

As a matter of fact, if FIA chose to cancel the Singapore GP, Hamilton would have six F1 titles with him now, Massa would have had one while Ferrari had a championship added to their tally and McLaren would have had to remove one from theirs.
