After taking a penalty and starting from the back of the grid, Lewis Hamilton drove a faultless race to earn himself a P5 finish in Monza. The Mercedes driver competed under a 1-stop strategy, which allowed him to climb the grid.
However, according to Martin Brundle, Lewis Hamilton was not a happy man with how the Italian GP ended. This was a cruel reminder of the Abu Dhabi GP to the 7-time World Champion, as Hamilton lost his 8th title due to a bizarre safety car incident.
Brundle told Sky, “As he walked through the parc fermé, waiting for the interviews with the podium drivers to finish, he didn’t look like he was impressed. What happened at the end of the race was painful to watch.” (translated using Google Translate)
He further added, “We discussed an initiative according to which if a similar problem arises in the last five laps of the races, the race should be stopped with a red flag and the race should be continued with a standing start.“

The former F1 driver cited the race in Baku last year as an example. The race was restarted after a red flag and Martin opined that “the fans deserved a thriller in the last laps”.
‘Battling’ people in Monza reminds Lewis Hamilton of his go-karting days
Having secured 103 pole positions in his illustrious career, Lewis Hamilton is no stranger to starting from the front row. However, he still prefers battling it out with his fellow competitors than starting at the front.
After the race, as quoted by the Mirror, Lewis said, “[It’s] a thousand times more enjoyable, battling with people, I remember my first go-kart was like an old kart, we always had to start at the back, old tires, that’s what I’ve always enjoyed doing.”

The Mercedes driver further added, “So having those battles is way more fun than starting first. It’s a different chapter but I much prefer battles.”
Hamilton will be hoping for more such chances in the remaining 6 races of the season. Moreover, he will be adamant to secure his and Mercedes’ first win of the season.
