2 weeks ago, Eddie Jordan said he was sure that Carlos Sainz would replace Lance Stroll at Aston Martin in 2025. That would create an “All Spanish Aston Martin” with Sainz and Fernando Alonso gunning for podiums. Combine that with Honda supplying engines to the Silverstone outfit, AMR could be the next Red Bull, in 2026. But that dream could be far-fetched. Another F1 insider reckons that Lawrence Stroll would never replace his son Lance despite his inconsistency.
Carlos Sainz has 3 wins and multiple podiums with Ferrari. Yet, they showed him the way out in 2024. Contrastingly, Lance Stroll, who has only 3 podiums to his name in 7 years, and is constantly outperformed by Alonso, continues to have Aston Martin’s backing. This led BBC’s Andrew Benson to reveal a bitter truth within the team that could hamper Sainz’s potential move to replace the Canadian.
Benson wrote to BBC: “Would Carlos Sainz be an upgrade on Lance Stroll in an Aston Martin next year? Yes. Is there any chance of Stroll being replaced? No. Aston Martin are owned by Lawrence Stroll. He is a team owner in F1 primarily because he has a dream of making his son world champion.”

Benson further shined a light on how Sainz could still join Aston Martin but not at the cost of Stroll. “Sainz could still end up at Aston Martin, as the driver market is fluid and there is no guarantee Alonso will stay, even though the team have offered him a new contract and want him. But if Sainz did join Aston Martin in 2025 – rather than, for example, Red Bull or Sauber/Audi or Mercedes – it would be as Stroll’s team-mate, not instead of him.”
The 25-year-old driver has evidently been Aston Martin’s kryptonite. But the saga of him attempting to perform up to expectations but failing continues. BBC F1 pundit Harry Benjamin believes that it is high time that the Silverstone-based team sacked him.

Aston Martin urged to sack Lance Stroll for a shot at being World Champions
In 2023, Fernando Alonso scored 206 points for Aston Martin. Contrastingly, Lance Stroll could only manage 74 points. Consequently, AMR could only manage P5 in the Constructors championship, falling only 22 points short of McLaren in P4.
“He’s only in that team, and we all know why, is because his father owns the team and runs the team,” Benjamin said on BBC’s Chequered Flag podcast. Aston Martin lost out on a top-three position in the Constructors’ Championship last year because they only had one man scoring the points. If Aston Martin wants to become a serious threat in Formula One, they have the facilities and the money to do it, they need a second driver.”

This opinion of Stroll is no longer limited to a few insiders. The data speaks for itself. Currently, the driver market relies on what happens within Red Bull. But if Stroll were to depart from F1, that could bring about the biggest shake-up in 2025.
