The rising Australian driver, who currently has been fighting in F2, Jack Doohan, tried to seize the day. As the news about Oscar Piastri’s uncertainty about making his F1 debut with Alpine made its rounds, the Australian jumped at the opportunity of pursuing the seat.
Aside from actively racing in F2, Jack Doohan is on the junior roster of Alpine. He was proactive in pursuing the opportunity to replace Oscar Piastri as the lead reserve driver at Alpine. And while he was at it, he tried to push for the F1 seat for 2023 as well.

Even though it didn’t quite go his way, Doohan still bagged an opportunity to make his debut in Friday’s FP1 session at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez during the Mexican Grand Prix weekend.
Speaking to the media after his outing, Doohan shared, “I’ve been preparing myself, trying to make my way into this paddock since, obviously, the news broke at the start of August,” referencing Oscar’s statement.
In his pursuit to make it to F1, Doohan even reached out to the CEO of Alpine, Laurent Rossi.
He reflected, “I didn’t have Laurent’s number or anything. So I actually sent him a DM [direct message] on Instagram, basically this huge, big, long paragraph saying why I think I could be a candidate going forward.”
“He replied at like 3am–I think he was in the US or somewhere – with his number at the bottom and that we should chat in the coming days,” the Aussie shared.
Unfortunately, for the Australian, Pierre Gasly is set to take the seat left vacant by Fernando Alonso. However, he is glad he didn’t hesitate to put his best foot forward.
Jack Doohan does not regret pushing for an official seat at Alpine
Jack Doohan, however persistent, was aware that he’d still be considered an outside candidate for an F1 seat for the year 2023. Ergo, he isn’t upset about losing it to Pierre Gasly. He, however, is grateful for having tried to improve his position as a driver on the team’s roster.
Today was amazing, unfortunately our session got cut short but I’m super happy to have been able to get out there and do some laps. To be on track with @alo_oficial and all the other F1 drivers was super special. Thank you for the opportunity @AlpineF1Team! 🇲🇽#MexicoGP #F1 pic.twitter.com/HLSwwKBNzk

He said, “It was an opportunity and even if it was a farfetched one, at least now with the seat obviously being closed off and Pierre taking it, I know that I’m not sitting here thinking ‘I wish I pushed a little bit more, I wish I tried.’”
As Doohan emphasized the experience Gasly brings to the table. He believes that the team would benefit from having him navigate the tracks.
He concluded, “I would have loved to have been in the seat but who knows? Everything happens for a reason.”
