I don’t think any of us expected that: F1 Italian GP winner Daniel Ricciardo

The race in Monza was filled with drama throughout the weekend. The Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas locked out the front row in Friday qualifying. But at the start of the sprint race, Hamilton got a poor start and dropped to P5 from P2.

Verstappen started the main race on pole position after Bottas went to the back of the grid because of his engine penalty. But it was McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo who jumped Max on the start and took the P1 position.

During the race, Max had a really slow stop that changed the complexion of the race. He came out behind Lando Norris who was net P3. Hamilton too had a slow stop and he too came behind Norris. But in a wheel-to-wheel incident in Turn 1, Max and Lewis crashed out of the race.

From then on, after the safety car, Ricciardo and Norris brought home McLaren‘s first 1-2 in 11 years.

“It was never a guarantee we would lead the whole race, but I was able to hold firm out front the first stint. I don’t think we had like mega speed, but it was enough to keep, obviously, Max behind.

To lead literally from start to finish, I don’t think any of us expected that. I don’t know there was something in me on Friday. I knew something good was to come, so let’s just say that,” said Daniel Ricciardo.
