The Belgian Grand Prix was a nightmare for Lewis Hamilton, who retired after a lap one shunt with Fernando Alonso. Alpine’s two-time F1 world champion didn’t take damage and finished P5. However, he had some harsh words for the seven-time World Champion. Hamilton responded in kind, and the fans agree.

After the lap 1 shunt, Fernando Alonso came onto the radio and said, “Yeah, what an idiot! Closing the door from the outside. I mean, we had a mega start, but this guy only knows how to drive and start in first.”

Even though Lewis Hamilton apologized to the team and assumed responsibility for the crash, he refused to talk to Alonso. However, he posted on his Instagram story and the fans went into raptures.

Lewis Hamilton posted the Formula 1 campaign against online abuse and respect towards all competitors. This included Alonso’s part as well in what fans saw as a dig at the Spaniard. Hence, they responded on Twitter.

Fans were quick to jump to the defense of the Briton as he assumed responsibility for the lap 1 incident. After the race, Lewis Hamilton came to speak to the media. When asked about the incident, the Mercedes driver responded, “Looking back at the footage, he was in my blind spot and I didn’t give him enough space, so it was my fault today.”

Lewis Hamilton has had a tough first half of the season. His Mercedes team has dropped the ball during the regulation reset and sits at least a second and a half behind the Red Bulls and the Ferrari. Last weekend, however, in light of the grid penalties, Hamilton was starting P4. The lap 1 shunt ruined Mercedes’ chances of a potential podium whilst Max Verstappen stormed the field to win the race from P15.

The debate around the paddock has been about whether the W13 is genuinely a flawed concept or whether Mercedes has failed to extract its potential from it.
