F1 is heading back to Montreal this weekend to host the Canadian GP. The sport has not visited the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit in the past two seasons and last raced in 2019. This is one of the circuits that missed out on being in the F1 action because of the Covid-19 pandemic. But the iconic track is ready for some F1 action this weekend.

Interestingly, despite being a street circuit, it is a high-speed track. It first held an F1 race in 1978 and fittingly it was won by home hero Gilles Villeneuve. The track is 4.361 km long with long straights and heavy braking zones. So for 70 laps, it is an arena for drivers to showcase their skills. Here teams usually run a low downforce setup to maximize performance on the straights.

The last time F1 raced in Montreal, it was a classic race. In 2019, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton put up quite a show for the motorsport fans and produced a battle for the ages. But it resulted in controversy and heated debate throughout the motorsports world, with FIA intervening and penalizing Vettel.

Why was Sebastian Vettel penalized in the 2019 F1 Canadian GP?

Vettel was leading the race from Hamilton but was constantly put under pressure by the Mercedes driver. He eventually made a mistake and went off the track, cutting a corner. But Hamilton complained he joined the track in an unsafe manner, which was agreed by FIA who handed a 5-second penalty to the four-time world champion.

The German driver vehemently protested on his team’s radio. “You need to be an absolute blind man to think you can go through the grass and then control the car. Was lucky I didn’t hit the wall. Where the hell am I supposed to go? This is a wrong world, I tell you. This is not fair. I’m angry… and I have the right to be angry. I don’t care what people say,” said Vettel.
