Lewis Hamilton did what many thought was impossible, and that was to match Michael Schumacher’s seven world titles. However, Hamilton has his eyes set on holding his own record as he aims to win his eighth title this year.

Lewis Hamilton has signed a two-year extension with the Brackley-based squad, which sees him compete on the grid till the end of the 2023 season.

Hence, former McLaren mechanic Marc Priestley believes that a record is in the back of Lewis’s mind, as he prepares to battle Red Bull’s Max Verstappen for the 2021 championship.

Lewis Hamilton to set his own title record in Formula One

Speaking on the F1 live podcast, as quoted by the Express, Priestley said, “It’s looking more and more like [the world title] is going to Max Verstappen. So will Lewis settle for seven titles or will he go for that eighth? I think he wants that record.

“Lewis can say he doesn’t care about records, but I’ve worked with him and know that’s not the case. Those records are in his head, and I think he wants this one,” he concluded.

Can Lewis regain the lead in the title race?

The Knight has won just three of the races so far this season, while his arch-rival, Verstappen has won five of them. Hence, Hamilton lost the lead in the driver’s standings to Dutchman and currently on his tail in second place.

Verstappen has 182 points under his belt, while Hamilton just has  150; the 32-points gap that currently exists between the two, is something Hamilton is hoping to bridge. While Verstappen is hoping to extend his lead and claim his first-ever Formula One title.

The upcoming race is the British Grand Prix at Silverstone- Hamilton’s home race; he will hope to deliver for Mercedes by getting a win in front of his home crowd with the intention of closing the gap to the Red Bull prodigy.
