The destinies of racing legends in Formula 1 are shaped by the stories that often remain untold. Such is the case of the Ferrari star Charles Leclerc. In a revelation that adds a touching layer to the tale of Leclerc’s meteoric rise, former Ferrari Sports Director Massimo Rivola spoke about the Monegasque driver’s journey to Formula 1. The key player in this narrative? The late Jules Bianchi, whose unconditional love for Leclerc played a pivotal role in propelling him to the pinnacle of motorsport.

Charles Leclerc, born in the racing enclave of Monte Carlo, had racing in his blood, thanks to his father, Hervé Leclerc, a former Formula 3 and Formula 2 driver. The stage was set for the Monegasque to follow in his father’s footsteps. However, financial constraints threatened to halt his karting journey, jeopardizing his racing dreams. This is where the Leclerc’s godfather, Jules Bianchi, entered the scene.

In 2010, Leclerc’s father faced the grim reality of not having enough funds to sustain his son’s karting career. But Jules Bianchi stepped in to support a young Charles Leclerc. Approaching Nicholas Todt, son of former FIA president Jean Todt, Bianchi secured the necessary financial backing that would become the lifeline for the Monegasque’s racing aspirations.

The New York Times quoted Leclerc as saying, “At the end of 2010, my father didn’t have the money to keep me in karting. Jules was kind enough to speak about me to Nicholas, who then paid for everything for me until I reached Formula 1. Without Jules, I would be nowhere,” underscoring the immense impact Bianchi had on his journey to Formula 1.

In a recent conversation with Sky Sports F1, Massimo Rivola also shed light on the discovery of Charles Leclerc. Rivola emphasized that it was Jules Bianchi who always spoke about Leclerc. “Sincerely, I didn’t discover Charles. But there’s a person who’s named Jules Bianchi, that today is no longer with us, and he always talked about him. Charles is one of those drivers that, when you need it, brings out that something extra. It’s called talent, hunger, it’s a mix of determination that few have,” explained Rivola.

The loss of both his father and godfather left a significant void in Charles Leclerc’s life. However, instead of succumbing to the weight of loss, Leclerc transformed these emotions into a driving force to honor their memories. He recently spoke about how his father played a pivotal role in his meeting with Jules.

Charles Leclerc opens up about how he first met Jules Bianchi

Charles Leclerc recently offered a glimpse into the moment that led to his meeting with Jules. He recalled a day when he feigned illness to escape the mundane routines of school. His father, not one to deny his son a day of adventure, took him to a go-kart track owned by Philippe Bianchi, his best friend.

“I don’t know why he indulged me [when I pretended to be sick] and took me to the go-kart track of his best friend, Philippe Bianchi,” revealed Leclerc in a report by L’Officiel Italy. The vibrant scene of children racing on the track captivated Charles, and he decided to take the plunge himself. Seeing other children racing on the track, I wanted to try it too. For my first car, I chose the color red. And I think I fell in love with this sport after just three laps, he added.
