Is Lawrence Stroll's money ruining the legacy of F1 legends like Adrian Newey?

While most people choose retirement as the best option at the age of 65, Adrian Newey is different. The aero wizard desires to go on in F1. But Newey wishes to pick a new side. With his exit from Red Bull, the designer genius became the hottest transfer individual. However, Adrian’s services do not come for free, maybe this is one of the reasons why a lot of teams didn’t approach him. But teams like Aston Martin, McLaren, and Ferrari became the top contenders to acquire Newey.

Among the top names, Lawrence Stroll-owned Aston Martin emerged as the No.1 choice. Stroll’s abundance of resources and Fernando Alonso’s presence have enticed Adrian Newey to join the team. But the suspense prevails. This week began with the news of Newey allegedly signing with AMR. As exciting as it may sound, Ferrari’s former boss, Peter Windsor feels Newey’s decision is slightly disappointing.

During his YouTube livestream, Peter Windsor expressed his feelings on this transfer. The pundit said: “It just doesn’t feel right to me. What more can I say? I’m too much of a purist, I’m a massive Adrian fan as everybody knows. You’d be an idiot not to be, given his talent. But I like him as a guy and I like him for his love of the sport and I just hate to see his career ending that way. But you know, money-money-money. It’s very sad anyway.” Windsor feels the Silverstone-based team isn’t the place for the most decorated technician of F1. Moreover, Stroll Sr.’s monetary offer played a huge role in luring Newey.

You may wonder if money is everything. In F1, yes it is, at least for the services Newey could provide Aston Martin, money will be crucial. Midfield teams with financial crunch could never extract profit from the genius. So, a team like AMR would be a great place for Adrian’s genius projects. Moreover, teams like McLaren and Ferrari have stepped away from the poaching game, which clears the field for Aston Martin.

Should Mercedes have approached Adrian Newey; and why did Ferrari and McLaren back out?

Peter Windsor is surprised that major teams like Ferrari and McLaren have left the arena free for Lawrence Stroll to play his game of Monopoly. Even more surprising is the fact that Mercedes didn’t play too hard for the aero wizard. The ex-Ferrari boss said with displeasure: “I just think it’s a sad indictment of Toto Wolf’s management. Obviously, over the last couple of years few years since 2022, he’s not going to Mercedes. He should be going to Mercedes, if Toto had done the job he should be hiring Adrian Newey.”

Meanwhile, Ferrari withdrew from the race to get Newey because they assumed a clash of powers. The maestro is an influential person, and this could disrupt Ferrari’s balance. This was Ferrari’s logical deduction. However, for most fans, Newey would’ve been the best option for the Maranello-based team. Especially now with Lewis Hamilton set to join, this new duo could’ve brought back the team’s glory.

And recently, McLaren has also ended their Newey quest. Zak Brown himself informed BBC Sport, “We’re not signing Adrian Newey.” Brown is currently happy with his squad and wouldn’t change anything for now. Reports believe Aston Martin could make big announcements on Adrian Newey sometime in September. And for most insiders, the deal has been sealed. Lawrence Stroll has allegedly hit the jackpot. More importantly, with the 2026 regulations, Newey’s strategic and design brilliance could change AMR’s trajectory to the positive side.
