Winning the race at Monza with AlphaTauri, will definitely go down as one of Pierre Gasly’s best moments. Whether that was enough to re-earn a Red Bull seat, is still a matter of debate.

AlphaTauri has of course, now confirmed him for the 2021 season. But, it perplexes Gasly why Red Bull did not even consider him – especially when scrutiny is increasing over Alex Albon’s future.

Gasly is quoted as saying, “I’m not disappointed, I’m just surprised. In 14 years Seb won a race with Toro Rosso, I’m the only other driver who won a race.”

Pierre Gasly compares his situation citing Vettel’s promotion

The last time an AlphaTauri (formerly Toro Rosso) driver won a race, he got promoted to the main team. And that certain German also went onto win four titles, with the Austrian-licensed outfit.

“Seb (Sebastian Vettel) got promoted to Red Bull and won four titles with the team. So I must say I’m just surprised I wasn’t really considered.”

“But at the moment I just need to perform and do the best job I can in the team I am. I’m not disappointed, I’m really happy to continue with AlphaTauri for another year. And I’ll keep doing my best for this team.” stated Gasly.

It has been a turnaround of sorts for Pierre Gasly in the last 12 months. And although AlphaTauri is his short term future, he will want to prove his mettle at Red Bull, provided he gets the chance.

What do Red Bull want from their 2021 drivers’ lineup then?

Now that Gasly will continue with AlphaTauri, questions will again be asked of who could occupy Red Bull’s second seat. The team’s emphasis has been Albon justifying through his performances, to lay claim on it for 2021.

But, the dangling speculation of either of Sergio Perez or Nico Hulkenberg occupying it, remains. And that will only intensify further, if Albon cannot deliver per expectations at Imola and Istanbul.

Although Gasly could be considered in the future, Milton Keynes will definitely not be his home for the next season. The only question that remains, is what more he has to do in order to earn a seat at the team.
