It was a breathtaking Wednesday night for Spanish football fans as Real Madrid managed to defeat favorites Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of the round of 16. Hence, having made it to the quarter-finals of this year’s Champions League, several F1 drivers, including Fernando Alonso went absolutely crazy on social media.
The Alpine driver took to Twitter to hail Real Madrid’s well-orchestrated ‘el-plan’. “#elPlan is the #elPlan . Hala Madrid,” he wrote in Spanish on Twitter.

But, it was Carlos Sainz who started off the proceedings by cheering Karim Benzema after the Frenchman pulled off an astonishing hat-trick to carry his team into the next round. The Ferrari driver wrote, “BENZEMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA,” barely minutes after Benzema scored the winning goal.
After a while, another tweet arrived from Sainz. “Real Madrid, Bernabéu and Champions. Someone tell me a more FATHER combination than this! How am I not going to love you…. #HalaMadrid,” Sainz added in Spanish through his official Twitter handle.

Why Fernando Alonso was as thrilled about the win
Well, it’s not necessarily the victory that got Alonso so cheerful but the way Real Madrid delivered it. Coming into the second leg, Real Madrid were already a goal down on aggregate; Kylian Mbappe scored a goal in the final minutes of the first leg to hand PSG the lead.

However, quite unfortunately, while Real Madrid were still seeking a way to take down PSG’s goal advantage, Mbappe scored another goal, giving the French club a comfortable two-goal cushion. The first-half whistle was blown as the Real Madrid players walked with their heads down into the cooldown room.
But, barely 15 minutes into the second half, Benzema came to life; the Frenchman tackled PSG goalkeeper Donnarumma to regain possession. Then, an assist from Vinicius Junior helped Benzema complete the goal. Then arrived two quick-fire goals in the 76th and the 78th minute of the game and again Junior was a crucial part of the build-up.
