In F1, rookie drivers come and go. Some are talented enough to survive in the sport, while others are not. But Oscar Piastri has so far showcased positive signs, ever since his transition to McLaren, in F1. His recent performances, rightfully so, have made him the center of attention. For McLaren, he acts as a blessing in disguise. As he is the ace for McLaren’s strategic resurgence, following the departure of veteran driver Daniel Ricciardo. Thanks to the rookie’s performances, he has emerged as a critical factor in McLaren’s efforts to bridge a huge monetary gap.

Amidst the whirlwind of F1, the departure of Daniel Ricciardo triggered a complex chain of financial implications for McLaren. The team’s plan, highlighted by F1 expert Karun Chandhok, focuses on using Oscar Piastri’s ability to score points regularly. Chandhok suggests McLaren’s trust in Piastri can help offset Ricciardo’s departure cost – $18 million. Additionally, this shift emphasizes the team’s adaptability and demonstrates the importance of emerging talents in F1.

Karun Chandhok suggests McLaren is counting on Oscar Piastri’s consistent performance a lot. The major factor was to compensate for Daniel Ricciardo’s leaving. Chandhok said that McLaren’s reliance on Piastri’s skills is expected to help them get back about $10 million after Ricciardo left. He stated, “The fact that they’ve got Oscar firing on all cylinders, scoring the points, and they’re going to get ahead of Aston because they have two drivers scoring points, they’re going to recoup about 10 million of what they paid Daniel not to drive. So that’s turned out to be a pretty smart move.”

Chandhok is spot-on with his insights! Not only has this turned out to be a smart move. But in doing so, McLaren has gotten a hot prospect who has so far passed the majority of tests, with flying colors. On top of that, they now have two young drivers who have the potential to fight for a future championship. Some insane plotting by the Papaya army!

McLaren’s proactive approach in harnessing Piastri’s potential not only reflects their adaptability. But also exemplifies the evolving dynamics of financial management in the competitive domain of F1. With only five races remaining, it’ll be interesting to see how many more points can Oscar gather & maybe even overshadow Norris.

Norris & Piastri have been very neck & neck in terms of pace this season. Despite it being his maiden F1 year, the Aussie seems rather comfortable & at one with his McLaren machinery. Quite the contrast to Daniel Ricciardo, who was struggling eternally barring that glorious weekend in Monza in 2021.

All that hassle to poach Piastri from Alpine is certainly paying off for the Woking team. It did cost them $18 million to get rid of Ricciardo, yet that was a worthy investment paying dividends now with Piastri’s performances. It was a mere swap for a younger Aussie in place of an older one, yet very effective, but will that affect Lando Norris’s status?

McLaren’s change in strategy shows how Piastri’s performances have helped the team stay financially stable. With Lando Norris still looking nowhere near his first race win in F1, and given Piastri’s form, alarm bells might soon ring at McLaren.

Is Oscar Piastri the No. 1 driver at McLaren?

Given his recent performances, and how much the team has been able to capitalize on Oscar’s performances. The driver dynamics at McLaren will certainly have some sort of impact. While their current ‘no.1’ driver, Lando Norris has been scoring good points. The Briton is surprisingly more prone to errors, compared to his rookie teammate, despite him having years of experience in F1.

It’ll be entertaining to see how McLaren will handle the driver dynamics and team order, especially at the Austin Grand Prix. Given that the track suits the in-form MCL-60. Whether or not Oscar will be the new ‘no.1’ driver mostly depends on Lando and how many mistakes he makes. But if the Australian rookie manages to have another stellar Grand Prix, he just might be able to do so.

Oscar Piastri’s exceptional performances have not only positioned him as a rising star for McLaren. But also played a crucial role in the team’s strategic resurgence in the current season of F1. Who knows if McLaren is in a position to win a race, it may well be Piastri who takes his debut Grand Prix win before Norris!
