In Formula 1, each driver’s salary is independently decided during the signing of the contract and sometimes there might be huge differences. It’s only obvious that the World Championship-winning drivers get paid more than drivers without a title. In fact, each race decides how much a driver is worth to a team, and that changes each season and even lap at times.
When we talk about Mercedes, the team has a 7-time world champion and on the other hand, George Russell who stepped into the grid just 5 years ago. In Season 6, Episode 6 of Drive to Survive, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell are called in by their team for a photo shoot. Hamilton was the first one to arrive while Russell shows up a few hours later. Lewis Hamilton is baffled by the timings given to both the drivers with him called in at 5:45 am and George Russell sleeping till 8:15 am.
To this, he raises the question, “What’s this with timing? He left at quarter past eight.” To this, Russell replied, “That’s why you get the big bucks.” After saying that Russell is younger than him and that he doesn’t need sleep, the 39-year-old said, “They can have it back. I want my sleep.”
Russell took the opportunity and said, “Give it to me. I’ll take it.” Although this was just some friendly banter between the two drivers, this issue must have frustrated Hamilton. As more things surface about Hamilton and Mercedes, it’s evident that the world champion is not happy. These could be the few things that snowballed into his decision to leave the team.
However, by the end of the episode, Lewis Hamilton signs a deal with Mercedes till 2025, as we know. And shortly after the season, he decided to head to the stables of Ferrari. And that brings up the question.
