There are certain moments during F1 press conferences when tempers flare up. But Lando Norris is someone whose interviews and conferences are at least neutral, if not light-hearted. Uncharacteristically, in a recent interview post the Spanish GP, the young Briton lashed out at a journalist’s questions.

The 2023 Spanish GP turned out to be a colossal failure for McLaren. Lando Norris started 3rd on the grid and his teammate Oscar Piastri started P10. This was McLaren’s best qualifying this season. But it all went downhill after Norris drove into the back of Lewis Hamilton’s car in Lap 1. Norris was forced to pit for a new front wing to replace the damaged one and that landed him right at P20. McLaren finished the race without scoring any points with Piastri at P13 and Norris and P17.

An F1 driver’s struggle doesn’t just end after the end of a disappointing race. Tough questions from journalists can act as an insult to injury. And that is exactly what happened when a journalist asked Norris about the new updates not working out for McLaren. Norris was visibly irritated and said as quoted by Motorsport-Total.com, “I don’t know what you’re talking about at all. There are no new parts. I don’t know where you got that from. There is nothing new. Just little things.”

He elaborated, saying, “If there is something new, you would see it on a piece of paper and we would say that there is something new. We had an upgrade in Baku and that was it.”

Norris has shown a potential to be a future F1 World Champion ever since his Rookie season at McLaren. And McLaren kept improving as a team, as a result of which his performance kept bettering. But that has not been the case since last year, with the new F1 car design.

Despite having won 8 Constructors’ championships since their Debut, McLaren is one of the slowest cars on the grid this season. Ever since F1’s 2022 car redesign, McLaren’s performance has worsened. For them, 2022 was bad. But 2023 is proving to be worse. This year they have only amassed only 17 points in 8 races.
