If there’s one dream every Formula 1 driver has, it’s winning a championship. And if these championships keep stacking up year after year for them, with no end to their domination in sight, you would think they enjoy those periods. Well, that isn’t the case. At least, not for Lewis Hamilton.
One of the most dominant periods in F1 has been the turbo-hybrid era from 2014 to 2021, during which Mercedes won all eight constructors’ crowns and Lewis Hamilton won six drivers’ titles. And what he revealed about his dominant period in F1 shows what makes him a true racer at heart.

Since F1’s 2022 regulation overhaul, we’ve been living in the age of Max Verstappen and Red Bull dominance, in which Hamilton and Mercedes haven’t competed for the championship in two years. This season, the Milton Keynes team has won all nine races so far and has already started focusing on its 2024 challenger. When Hamilton heard about this, he appealed to the FIA to implement a ban on developing next year’s cars until a fixed date to prevent Red Bull’s continued dominance. And when Verstappen heard about the Brit’s appeal, he just said, as per mirror.co.uk, “Life is unfair.”
Despite Max’s comment, Lewis stuck to his guns and talked about his dream in F1 on the Chequered Flag podcast. He said, “As a sport, we have to have a conversation about how we can set it up to be better for the future, so we have tighter races. If possible, the pack is closer, and we have close battles between a Red Bull and a Ferrari and a Mercedes and an Aston; that would be epic.”
Although Mercedes, Aston, and Ferrari are fighting it out for P2 at every race weekend, he explained how he would want it to be a fight for P1 instead. He revealed, “I don’t dream of having a dominant period ever again for myself, like winning multiple championships in a row. But the hope would be that you can be in the battle at least amongst god knows how many.”

The 2022 regulations helped make racing closer, but Red Bull absolutely nailed the changes and, thereby, has such a dominant car. While everyone behind Red Bull is getting closer, he knows one of the few reasons for it is that the Milton Keynes outfit is focusing more on 2024. Even so, he is still looking forward to closing the gap further at the British GP.

The Austrian GP was not an ideal weekend for the Brackley team, and Hamilton and Toto Wolff explained how it was an opportunity to learn about their car better. In the past few months, Mercedes has had to revamp its car to compete at the level it is at right now, and it’s still understanding its car. After its learnings at the Austrian GP, the team is coming into the British GP with an updated front wing.
While talking to the media about the update, he didn’t seem too optimistic about his chances, but he was hopeful that Mercedes could further close the gap with the new front wing. He said, “We have a new front wing. So it’s just one step, hopefully further in the right direction. It’s not a huge package or anything like that. We’re just making, step by step, hopefully trying to close down the gap.”
