Recently, Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko spoke about a number of subjects. Among them, he opened up on Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.
At one point, he compared Hamilton and Bottas to Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez. The Austrian acknowledged that Hamilton and Verstappen were the protagonists of the championship.
He said, “Bottas isn’t as strong in the decisive moment after all, and he also has weaker days, as you saw in Imola. And at race pace, as we saw in Portugal, Hamilton again put Bottas in his place.

“The bottom line is that there are only two drivers who are in contention for the championship.”
What else did he say about Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas?
Speaking of the Mercedes and Red Bull drivers, Marko admitted that Perez is steadily finding his feet. The Mexican driver has improved his standing to a point where he is merely two-tenths away from Verstappen.
However, he and Bottas are still miles away from their respective teammates.
For now, all they can do is act as the rear gunner for their partners. Whoever is the more consistent finisher will be able to help their respective team in the championship.

So far, Perez has been doing a fine job of recording consistent race finishes. On the other end of the spectrum, Bottas is trying his hardest to put up a fight.
Next weekend, the F1 paddock visits the principality of Monaco. Lewis Hamilton has a good track record at the street circuit, while Bottas isn’t too shabby.

However, the Red Bull pair of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez will be on the prowl. They know that they cannot afford to let Mercedes get too far ahead in the championship. Otherwise, they will lose out on the Drivers and Constructors’ championships.
