Toto Wolff is responsible for one of the most successful eras for a Formula 1 team, ever! Under Toto’s command, Mercedes registered an unprecedented eight consecutive constructors’ championship titles. The greatest show of dominance in the modern era of Formula 1. This dominance, however, might come to an end soon.

Mercedes is on the back foot this season with the all-new technical regulations. The new regulations have changed the cars to quite an extent. And Toto Wolff will be careful how they progress.

Toto Wolff is not happy with the slow progress

Mercedes, because of the new 2022 regulations, went through an extreme change. The car W13 side pods have not helped with their porpoising issues. Moreover, the porpoising has greatly affected the cars’ straight-line speeds and also their braking distances. At best, Mercedes currently have the third fastest car on the grid.

But with the help of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, Mercedes has still conjured decent results, finishing P4 and P3 respectively at the Australian Grand Prix. Mercedes currently has a lot of bounce on the straights, which is not an ideal scenario. But Mercedes will not introduce any significant upgrades soon, Toto revealed.

“Nothing we did this weekend [in Australia] has unlocked the aerodynamic potential or has reduced the bouncing. We’re still at the same place. And that’s why it doesn’t make any sense to bring updates, because you’re confusing yourself even more. Maybe it’s the fact the more downforce you bring, the worse the bouncing gets. So we are still learning.” explained Toto

Toto believes instead of rattling their brains out, Mercedes needs to assess and then take action. The newest addition of the zero-pods isn’t helping them much. In addition to that, the team also shaved a piece of the floor to reduce the bouncing, but had no luck. We are still only three races far into the season, but if Mercedes doesn’t find a solution quickly, they will start lagging.

Even though Mercedes does not have the best car on the grid, they need to keep battling for podiums. Who knows? Maybe they can grab another podium at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix next weekend. Mercedes would only want to build on their previous races and hope for a better result.
