Lewis Hamilton has arguably had the best rookie season ever in Formula 1 history. Imagine being strapped into a McLaren at the age of 22. Even though Hamilton would go on to become the greatest driver this sport has ever seen, he still regrets his fallout with Fernando Alonso. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that when a young rookie challenges the authority and talent of an established giant, tensions brew. However, Hamilton has documented exactly where it all went wrong for the duo at McLaren in 2007.

In 2007, this is what he had to say about his relationship with Alonso in his book published in The Sun, “Coming into the McLaren team as a two-time World Champion, he [Alonso] had not really been challenged too closely before. I do not believe Fernando expected a rookie to challenge him so strongly, let alone beat him, but it was just racing.”

He then went on to lament the fact that he could not repair his relationship with the Spaniard. “I like and admire Fernando, so I was sad and disappointed that, for whatever reason, our relationship did not improve. But it was not for lack of trying.”

It’s not easy being the Champion. You’re always the man to beat. For Lewis Hamilton, if he is to never regain the peak of his dominance, his fall from grace would be the most bitter demise seen in Formula 1’s history. According to British former racing driver and current commentator, John Watson, the end for Hamilton is right at his doorstep.

Talking to PlanetF1, Watson hypothesized, “If he finds himself being overwhelmed by Russell – let’s say Russell went on and won two or three Grands Prix this year and Lewis was unable to compete against Russell, that I would suspect would be the end of Lewis as a Grand Prix driver.”
