The Historic Grand Prix of Monaco, or simply the Historic Monaco GP, is a series of races held on the Circuit de Monaco in the streets of Monte Carlo. This racing event is centered around historic automobiles and their drivers. The event has been run consecutively since 1997. And now we are all set to witness its 13th edition, two weeks prior to the Monaco Grand Prix.

It is one of the unique events in motorsports. Further, the event will bring a wave of nostalgia into F1 fans’ minds. The Automobile Club de Monaco holds the event two weeks prior to the Monaco Grand Prix. Even-numbered years are reserved for this event, while the ePrix Formula E race happens in odd-numbered years.

While the ePrix is certainly a spectacle to behold, the Historic Grand Prix brings a certain charm and elegance to the Circuit de Monaco. Both events see an influx of people in its streets and hotels as drivers, teams and their VIP guests descend the area to fight for glory.

History of the Historic Monaco Grand Prix

The event made its debut in the year 1997. Over the years, the iconic Ferraris, McLarens, and many other legendary cars have made their way into the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique.

The cars range from the pre-war times to recent history. With open-wheel single-seaters racing around the streets of Monaco, fans will witness some significant action throughout the weekend. The year 2022 will be the 13th edition of the event.

The 12th edition happened in 2021 as opposed to the even-numbered years because of COVID-19. The race will be driven by amateur drivers and there are 8 categories of races from pre-war cars to the 1980s.

The 2022 Historic Monaco GP

This year’s event starts from May-13 until May-15. The three-day event will see free practice on Friday from 11:00 am local time, followed by qualifying on Saturday from 8:30 am. The race is all set to start at 9 am local time on Sunday where there will be 8 different races as there are 8 categories this time.

The Pre-war Grand Prix is the first race on Sunday. The legendary Juan Manuel Fangio’s single-seater will also feature in the race. His car is not the only iconic one to be on display as the likes of Ayrton Senna (1981-1985), Jackie Stewart (1966-1972), Niki Lauda (1973-1976), and Gilles Villeneuve (1977-1980) single-seaters will also be on show.
