Is Toto Wolff dreaming too big with Verstappen, or is there a smarter choice for Mercedes?

Who will replace Lewis Hamilton in Mercedes? At present, this is one of the burning questions without any answers. Team Principal Toto Wolff is far from deciding the candidates. Therefore, Mercedes has some serious explanation to give! Fans and F1 pundits have put forth their ideas on whom to choose. Moreover, Wolff seems to have a handful of names that could be potential teammates of George Russell next year. However, unless there aren’t any official announcements, the suspense will continue to build even more.

Meanwhile, Ralf Schumacher, a six-time GP winner and brother of Michael Schumacher, suggested Carlos Sainz as the best successor for Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes. After the 2024 British GP, he spoke with Sky Sports, summarized the race, congratulated Hamilton, and revealed his thoughts on Mercedes’ right choice.

Schumacher was asked who will succeed Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes next season. He responded, “Things are getting a little difficult with Carlos Sainz. People thought he was going to Williams, but that’s probably no longer the case. He’s finding the door open at Alpine.” Schumacher described Sainz’s tough situation and added, “But he still sees an opportunity at Mercedes because team boss Toto Wolff recently said a few things had changed again.” Rumors suggested Wolff was in conversation with Sainz about a potential seat. “That’s why I currently see Sainz as the most likely driver for 2025 alongside George Russell,” Schumacher concluded.

Toto Wolff is keeping a close watch on all the drivers on the present. Especially on the ones with no contract next year. At the same, he is keeping an eye on the junior categories of motorsport. Among all the names and rumors that have come up in recent times, Kimi Antonelli shines prominently.

The young 17-year-old currently racing in F2 with Prema, was a top candidate to replace Logan Sargeant at Williams [Mercedes’ satellite team]. This move would eventually turn into a Mercedes seat for the young driver in the future, possibly in 2025. Wolff is considering Antonelli as a potential heir to Lewis Hamilton’s legacy at Mercedes.
