Nyck de Vries, the highly-regarded Dutch driver, experienced the harsh realities of the sport as he was axed by Red Bull midway through his rookie F1 season. While the decision was met with disappointment and sympathy from Toto Wolff as he expressed his support for the talented Dutch driver. However, sympathy was all that Wolff could offer.

Nyck de Vries, who had previously been a reserve driver for Mercedes, was brought in to replace Pierre Gasly at AlphaTauri. With an impressive debut for Williams in the previous season’s Italian GP and a successful record in F2, Formula E, and endurance racing, de Vries was expected to deliver. Despite de Vries’ short-lived F1 career at AlphaTauri, Toto Wolff expressed continued support stating, “I am a fan of Nyck because he is enormously intelligent and has always contributed a lot to the development of our car. I do feel sorry for him. He called me Monday morning to ask if I had time for coffee. I did. On our team, all positions have been filled, but we will continue to support him where we can.”
