The 2023 championship fight, for many, is a foregone conclusion. And we’re only three races into a packed 23-race calendar. However, while in all probability, Red Bull will win both the driver’s and constructors’ championships this year, the main talking point is which of the Red Bull drivers will come out on top. Will it be the defending champion, Max Verstappen? Or his teammate, Sergio Perez?
Perez has been arguably one of the stronger teammates Verstappen has faced in his F1 career. But be that as it may, no one has ever come close to closing the gap and really taking the fight to the 2x champion. And this is exactly why, even though Perez is a great competitor, he may never be able to defeat and dethrone the Dutch lion.

We’ve all seen the jubilant scenes whenever Perez is on the podium. Papa Perez is always there, as proud as a father can be. Naturally, he hopes to see his son win the world championship as well, and he staunchly believes in it, too. But is he living in a fool’s paradise?
On a recent episode of the Late Braking F1 podcast, the hosts discussed this. They said, “Sergio Perez will never be World Champion.” But what deserves such a damning conclusion? “He was really impressive in Saudi, holding off Verstappen. It was like Valtteri Bottas once again.”
“Maybe we’ll have a championship fight here. Then he spins into the gravel in Australia and we’re like nevermind. I’m sure he cans till get some wins this year but I don’t think he will be there consistently enough for a championship fight. It’s sad.”
There’s palpable tension amongst the Bulls. But is Sergio Perez really not a threat to Max Verstappen’s throne?

Max Verstappen will never be an easy teammate to beat. That being said, it isn’t impossible. He is human, after all. There’s this one crucial aspect a driver needs to be able to go toe-to-toe with a goliath like Verstappen. And unfortunately, Checo lacks exactly that.
According to ex-F1 driver, Johnny Herbert, “Do I personally think that, across the season, he can beat Max Verstappen? My gut probably says no, because we’ve only seen glimpses of speed from Sergio. We’ve seen the odd race where he gets it all together but with Max, it just seems like every weekend he just wins.”
