Lawrence Stroll was ridiculed for investing around $300 million in development for the Aston Martin factory in Silverstone. Little did everyone know that the Canadian businessman had big things in mind. Starting with signing Fernando Alonso from Alpine, Stroll changed the entire trajectory of the team as it tasted its first great season since 1999 when it was called Jordan. And to make it even better in the coming years, the factory is about to open in phases, starting this month, which can multiply Fernando Alonso’s success.
But how could this factory change fortunes further for Stroll and Alonso? For starters, straight-up better technology with regular access to their own wind tunnel. Currently, Aston Martin relies on Mercedes‘ wind tunnel and other technologies and thus has limited windows to use it. The team will cut down their dependency on Lewis Hamilton & Co. They will also be able to address the belief that it is Mercedes that is holding them back in their fight against Red Bull. So, even as Mercedes’ plans for new facilities built at the cost of about $86 million build-up, Aston Martin would be seen slowly drifting away from them.

So now, just straight up imagine if the team was able to accomplish their 2023 season run so far operating that way, what all they could do to boost Fernando Alonso when they come under one roof? Talking about the benefits, the team’s performance director, Tom McCullough, lists a few. As quoted by the Speed Cafe, he says, “I think it’s going to make a bigger difference than people even realise just for communication.”

“Having your own wind tunnel means that, within the regulations, you can use it when you want to. So if you have a problem or you learn something, you can just stop, go back, draw some new bots, think about something, then go back and turn it on again. And also [having our own wind tunnel] onsite, if there’s any reworks or problems, the people who are drawing the parts are just in the building next to you.”

Hence, communication could drastically improve, thus improving coordination. Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll can thus greatly benefit from the new facilities.
Will Fernando Alonso be in F1 to reap the benefits of the new Aston Martin factory?
The 41-year-old Spaniard is currently the oldest driver on the grid. Despite that, he remains one of the fastest and most talented. However, the question still remains: would Alonso still be in F1 to fully reap the benefits of the development that could potentially take place in the new factory? Will his age allow it?

While we can’t talk about whether his body will permit it or not, Fernando Alonso certainly looks forward to a couple more seasons to compete at the pinnacle of motorsport. With the first car, entirely developed there, coming out in 2025, Alonso’s chances look pretty great, as his recent success has only increased his hunger to compete.
He has previously been quoted by F1 Briefings as saying, “I want to be two to three years at this level. That is the team’s aim too. We are not at a stage to win a championship, but we want time to reach the target,” which falls right into Stroll’s and the team’s plan.
