It is believed that the drivers in the fastest car are best suited to win the championship. But Sergio Perez has proved this statement wrong on multiple occasions this season. And in doing so, he has created a unique but undesirable record. On 3 separate, consecutive race weekends, Perez has not made it to Q3, let alone fight for the race win. But Christian Horner has still provided constant support during such a rough period for Perez.

In the last 3 races, Sergio Perez has failed to go quick enough to go past Q2, while the likes of Alpine, and even McLaren are zooming past his name on the time charts. The performance would be considered dismal even if it was not for his overachieving teammate, Max Verstappen. Perez did get a strong start to the season, winning in Saudi Arabia ad Azerbaijan. But in Monaco, the string of poor qualifying performances started. Even though Christian Horner has been supporting him through this period, something seems to be off.

Commenting on Perez’s unfortunate period, Horner said, “Unfortunately for Checo, he just didn’t get that first lap in on the slick tire when the circuit was in the window, then he came back onto the inter because it was too wet for the slicks, so it was frustrating for him”

He further added, “However, unlike Monaco, this is a track that you can overtake at, the forecast is saying it’ll be a dry race, he’s a great racer and he’s got a fast car, so I’d be disappointed if we weren’t much further up the order tomorrow.”

Red Bull is the quickest car on the grid. But Perez’s RB19 has had to see the back of many other slower cars during the race. At the beginning of 2023, Perez was considered to be the championship rival to Max Verstappen. But again, it has been a dominating performance by Verstappen, while the gap to Perez keeps increasing.

Earlier, Christian Horner had commented that Perez should forget about the championship and focus on driving so that the pressure is taken off of him. But Perez was of a different opinion. Perez said, as quoted by straitstimes, “I don’t think so. We always have to deliver to our maximum. And we just have to make sure we deliver. I cannot afford to have any bad weekends any more. I think I’ve had two or three bad weekends in the season, so I really have to get rid of those and keep the consistency high.”
