Pierre Gasly had been the subject of a lot of speculation in the drivers’ market for the last few months. His departure from AlphaTauri seemed imminent. It was further complemented by Fernando Alonso’s move to Aston Martin at the end of the season.

But there had been nothing officially confirmed, and it was all rumors. What further brought doubts to the move was Gasly’s relations with Alpine’s Esteban Ocon.

The two Frenchmen were childhood friends who have arguably grown apart over time. They have had public spats too, going back to their time in karting. However, now that the move has been confirmed, things will have to be different.

After the announcement, Gasly was asked about his ties with his compatriot. Gasly said, “Our relationship has had its ups and downs since, it’s nothing new for anyone. I would say that since our arrival in F1, it has improved. We both achieved one of our dreams, but we went through different stages.”

“There’s no point in comparing ourselves with Esteban when we were six, 12, 18 and now 26, we’ve grown a lot. We’re a lot more mature, and a lot more responsible, and in the end, we have a goal. Common,” he said assuringly.

“We both want to be competitive, we both want to fight at the top. And we know that to achieve that we have to work together for the team. I’m pretty excited about that. It’s an opportunity for both of us to return to a relationship similar to the one we had in the past,” Pierre said.
