Max Verstappen won the 2021 championship in a Hollywood-esque manner. He overtook the reigning champion Lewis Hamilton on the last lap of the season to take home his first title in the sport. But when asked if he would like to win the title in that manner once again, he gave a really honest answer.

During a Q&A session with f1elly, he was asked if he would like to win the title on the last lap or 6 races ahead of Abu Dhabi. While his teammate Sergio Perez mentioned that he would be happy either way as long as he takes home the championship, Verstappen gave a quirky answer.
“6 races before the end? Quite an optimistic person. I think it is good to experience both. So I have one. I have to try to achieve the other one. But guys, we need a better car,” said the world champion.

Recently, in another interview, he was asked a similar question, and he mentioned that he had not predicted that he would win his first title in that manner.

It is quite rare that a driver wins the championship on literally the last lap of the season in F1. So one cannot blame the Red Bull driver for not thinking about winning the title in this manner.

“It’s insane. If you would say that before the season or even with a few races to go, and I would be like that’s mental. Even the night before, I couldn’t imagine something like that. I hope it never happens again.”
“Like, it never came up in my mind that I would be fighting in the last lap for the Championship. Last race, yes you can imagine it’s happened in the past. But last lap? Yeah,” said Verstappen.
