Charles Leclerc was tipped to be one of the biggest talents to arrive in Formula 1. However, contrary to every such talented driver’s trajectory, the man hasn’t been able to do any wonders in his dream team. Sebastian Vettel, while leaving Ferrari, wrote in his farewell message to Charles, “To Charles, you are the most talented driver I came across in 15 years of F1. Don’t waste it.” And perhaps taking his senior’s word of advice, Leclerc might pull off a Vettel.

Sebastian Vettel became the youngest driver to win a championship, and then two and three, and four championships during his time at the Milton Keynes-based outfit. However, in 2014, he decided to take an early departure from the team he had called home for 15 years. How was that possible, though? It was because of the “Get-out-clause” in his contract. Meaning if he cannot score a stipulated amount of points with the team, either of the parties could terminate the contract. And Leclerc, who has been Vettel’s teammate at Ferrari, has been tipped to follow in his footsteps.

As quoted by Formula Passion, Helmut Marko spoke to Sport Bild about Leclerc’s future and which may manifest as a similar step to that of Sebastian. He said, “It makes no sense that Ferrari wants to do without Carlos Sainz, who is doing a good job. For Charles Leclerc, on the other hand, it is a common thing that the driver has to score a minimum number of points more or less shortly after the summer break. If you don’t reach that amount of points, both parties are free to terminate the contract: this clause allowed Sebastian Vettel to join Ferrari in 2015.”

There has been a lot of uncertainty at the two giants. The first one is Ferrari, who, despite all their boastful claims, couldn’t deliver yet again. The Second is Mercedes. Silver Arrow’s champion, Lewis Hamilton contract, is set to expire at the end of this year and the German team hasn’t been able to give any good reason to Lewis for him to want an extension. Could the turn of events see Leclerc take Hamilton’s seat?

According to F1 journalist Leo Turrini, if Lewis doesn’t sign an extension with Mercedes, the seat is most likely to be filled by Charles. He said, “Leclerc is talking to Mercedes is the open secret. Everyone knows it, from the remote garage in Maranello to the Indian Ocean.”
