The current landscape of Formula 1 is dominated by the cost cap. Brought in to string the entire field together, at least financially, these financial regulations were F1 and the FIA’s attempt to bring parity between the giants of this sport and the other less affluent constructors. That being said, the legacy of the cost cap will always be remembered for one notorious instance. Last year, the dominant Red Bull racing team was found in breach of the cost cap that caused a huge hue and cry in the paddock and sent shockwaves throughout the whole motoring world.
But if you think that the Milton-Keynes-based outfit crossed the financial norms only once back in 2021, then you’re in for a surprise. As it turns out, Red Bull have a long history of being a spendthrift, and this dates way back to their association with Aston Martin. In 2016, Aston Martin joined hands with Red Bull in an alliance that would last five years and birth the Aston Martin Valkyrie. But behind this is the notorious history of the team’s lack of pocket control!
Christian Horner says Adrian Newey "nearly bankrupted" Aston Martin while developing the Valkyrie.
"And of course, we’ve got Adrian Newey, who probably doesn’t know where our finance department even is!"

While this was a joint venture between the two companies, Adrian Newey was the mastermind behind the car. Naturally, the blame fell on him. According to Christian Horner, “He [Newey] created an incredible, incredible car, that almost bankrupted Aston Martin! But I mean, it is an absolute gem of a car.”
