Keeping up the tradition of continuously shifting base in the F1 circus, Fernando Alonso yet again made an unusual choice in 2022. He snubbed Alpine, the rulers of midfield, to make a move to Aston Martin who finished towards the unwanted end of the standings. But there is always more than what meets the eye. And the most experienced driver on the grid surely knows to look beyond the prima facie value. In an interview with his new team, he reveals what made him go for the underdogs.
Still, after that third world championship, the Spaniard wanted to stick around the sport for longer. Perhaps the multiyear contract offered by the British team gave him the very security he was looking for. The team also brought in Red Bull’s ex-aero chief, Dan Fallows, and also set up a new manufacturing facility. Because of these reasons, Fernando was assured that the years of his contract and the trajectory of the development of the team to achieve the ultimate goal align together. Admitting that this new team is an extremely special opportunity for him, he even stated that he had been preparing for this challenge and was physically and mentally set to go.
When asked why he picked the new team over a more competitive previous team, in an exclusive interview with the AMF1 team, he said, “Aston Martin F1 is taking the necessary steps to win in the near future. The team is determined to become a championship contender and will do whatever it takes to get there. This ambition is appealing to any racing driver. You see all the investment, the new factory, the talent joining the team, and you want to be part of it.”

While the three most crucial factors were laid out, there is also another obvious one.
What made Fernando Alonso consider the offer?
Filling in for the outgoing multiple world champion, the team only saw it fit to bring in another who had captured that glory. Fernando Alonso, perhaps, was the first one to jump ships to start the 2022 silly season. Having full faith in his new motoring home, he said he sees this project “as a winning one”. Additionally, he said that the team will soon start winning races and championships. But what made him even consider the offer in the first place? The iconic brand name had a role to play in Fernando Alonso’s decision.

He said, “And then there is the name, Aston Martin. It is and always will be, an iconic brand in motorsport and the automotive industry. To write the next chapter in the brand’s history and become part of the Aston Martin family makes me very proud.”
