After a nearly stagnant start to the season, McLaren brought in upgrades before the Austrian GP. And the upgrades worked perfectly, getting Lando Norris a P4 finish on Sunday. And Norris proved to be quicker than Lewis Hamilton, thus adding another problem to Hamilton’s bag of troubles. After such a showing, Norris was expected to do better at the British GP, but he has ruled out the chances of a podium at his home race in Silverstone.
With such a beautiful turnaround at the Austrian GP, McLaren showed the grid that they don’t belong in the midfield. If not for Sergio Perez‘s spectacular comeback from P15 to P3, Norris could have even stood on the podium. Norris was quite happy with his P5 finish. And to his surprise, he got promoted to P4 after the race because of time penalties for other drivers. However, he does not think there will be further improvements in Silverstone.
Norris said, as quoted by Motorsport-Total, “Austria was our best race and I don’t think it’s going to get much better. I’m hoping for something similar. But I don’t expect it to get any better. I think we can try to keep our pace this weekend–that’s our goal. To be better might be a little much to ask. But if we just start consolidating our positions, then I’d be happy.”

So McLaren might not be thinking of getting a podium with their lead driver having such a view. But Hamilton does have another rival to focus on now. One that will playfully pester you off track as much as he will attack you on the racetrack.

The Stewards handed out a lot of time penalties during the Austrian GP. After the race, they said they had to review around 1200 track-limit violations. And as many as 12 penalties were handed out to 8 drivers after the race. One of them was Lewis Hamilton. He got a 5-second time penalty during the race as Norris kept pointing out his track-limit violations on team radio. And he got another 5-second penalty after the race for the same reason.
Ahead of the British GP, Norris was asked if he would emerge as the “Top Brit” in Silverstone. To that, he replied saying, “It depends if Lewis keeps it within the track limits. I’m hoping for a fight.” Talk about insult to injury. The 23-year-old is making brilliant use of humor to conceal his hilarious insults and is building relationships at the same time.
