Fernando Alonso made multiple bad decisions when it came to moving from one team to another. However, Daniel Ricciardo‘s move might trump all of Alonso’s bad decisions. As his new Teammate exposes AlphaTauri’s Achilles Heel, Daniel Ricciardo hoping for a good F1 comeback and future possibilities seem to be doomed. What are these possibilities and why are they doomed? What did his new teammate say?
After parting ways with McLaren last season, Ricciardo advised that he won’t be on the grid for the 2023 season. Then why all of a sudden has the Honey Badger joined AlphaTauri? It’s because of the future prospects it brings. Ted Kravitz explained that AlphaTauri finishing last in constructors will be a disaster for Red Bull. If Daniel Ricciardo is able to save the Red Bull‘s sister team from disaster, then he’ll have a good chance to replace Sergio Perez.

However, AlphaTauri’s performance doesn’t make it any easier for Ricciardo to achieve that feat. Yuki Tsunoda has been able to extract that odd point out of a couple of races, but the AlphaTauri car seems to be falling back making it even more difficult for Daniel Ricciardo to save the sinking team from finishing dead last. Ricciardo’s point-scoring potential in the AlphaTauri and the team’s performance blunders were talked about in a recent podcast.

According to the Autosport F1 & Motorsport podcast, the host said “It’s really hard to see, especially in the context of last weekend where Alpha Tauri had quite a lot of updates to the car. They were quite wide-ranging actually, new side pods and floor. Pretty much 50% of the aerodynamics were probably new, maybe more than that. And to the media, [Yuki] Tsunoda was just like ‘ It doesn’t feel like it is. It just feels the same.’ So the team isn’t making any steps forward with the current car and as we all know, in F1 staying still means you’re going backwards. So it’s very hard to see regular points.”
With AlphaTauri’s major upgrades not really working the way the team wanted to, it’s going to be really hard for Daniel Ricciardo to compete with the teams who are constantly improving. With McLaren moving up the grid to join the Top 4 teams, the points-scoring positions are already going to be sealed unless there’s a mishap. Adding to this the F1 owners’ recent request.

Liberty Media wants Red Bull to sign a competitive second driver
Max Verstappen’s dominance has led to the race winner finishing a country mile ahead of the podium finishers. There isn’t really a competitor for Max Verstappen at the moment. Even the threat posed by Sergio Perez has gone away. The spectacle for the fans isn’t that interesting as they already know who’s going to be the race winner. To stop this, the American F1 owners have stepped in.

According to Formu1a.uno, Liberty Media wants Red Bull to have 2 competitive drivers. That means signing a competitive driver alongside Max Verstappen. While Daniel Ricciardo might have been the consideration, sources suggest that Red Bull is targeting Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris. It’ll be interesting to see who Red Bull goes for.
