Daniel Ricciardo made the switch from Renault to McLaren ahead of the 2021 season. His move to the Woking outfit promised much but has so far been quite underwhelming. Ricciardo has had his moments, such as the victory in Monza last year. However, most of his tenure has been substandard in retrospect.

He has failed to compete with his teammate Lando Norris. He finished behind Norris in his first year at the team and so far trails the Britton this season as well.
Team orders almost land Daniel Ricciardo in a spot
The Azerbaijan GP was once again an interesting affair, with cars zooming through the narrow streets of Baku. The race saw multiple retirements, however, another moment that caught the attention of the fans happened on the radio.

The McLaren team decided to make a strategy call that asked Daniel Ricciardo to hold position behind his teammate Lando Norris. This was to aid Norris chase after Alonso and possibly pull off an over-cut.
This was despite the fact that Ricciardo was under risk from Pierre Gasly. However, the score was settled in the closing stages when Norris was instructed to hold position behind the Aussie. In the end, both Ricciardo and Lando finished in the points coming home at P8 and P9, respectively.

Ricciardo had his two cents on the whole incident. He said, “….There was a lot of radio chatter so guess everyone found that ‘exciting'”.

He will now be looking forward to the next race in Canada and hoping for a good outing. Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is also the track where Ricciardo notched his first F1 win way back in 2014.
Who knows if he could run it back and magically claim the top spot again this weekend? And if not, then a strong performance to kick-start his season.
