For many, Michael Schumacher is regarded as their hero and inspiration in Formula One. McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo is no different and holds the seven-time world champion in high regard.
The Australian had his first duel with Schumacher when the German was at Mercedes. The two were battling it out at the Japanese Grand Prix, and Ricciardo vividly remembers the feeling of racing against Michael.

Daniel Ricciardo holds Michael Schumacher in high regard
Growing up, many of the drivers from the current grid aspired to race against Schumacher. So, it is no surprise when Ricciardo had to chance to battle his idol on the race track his emotions were high.

Speaking to Sportsbild, as quoted by Soy Motor. Ricciardo said, “I remember how in one of my first races, at Suzuka, I had a short duel with him. It was a little cat and mouse game on the track, and that was completely surreal. I loved every second.
“Michael has seven world titles. He is the God of this sport.”

Daniel thinks Mick got into Formula One on merit
Now in 2021, the Australian driver has got a chance to race against Michael’s son, Mick Schumacher. Many assume that Schumacher Jr has only got onto the grid because of his iconic surname. However, Ricciardo backs Mick by stating that he has reached the pinnacle of motorsport on merit.

Daniel said, “I don’t want anyone to think Mick Schumacher is in F1 just because of his name. Everything I see from him shows me that he has earned his place here with us. He works so hard and I’m impressed with his journey.”

With the summer break now coming to a close, Schumacher would be hoping to step up his game for the second half of the season. The young German had his best finish at the recent Hungarian GP, where he placed twelfth, but it wasn’t good enough to grab any points.
