Daniel Ricciardo Disagrees With Popular Fan Opinion After the Turkish Grand Prix

Daniel Ricciardo scored some important points in the last few races before the Turkish Grand Prix. The Australian claimed a podium finish at the Nurburgring and the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Ricciardo started the Turkish Grand Prix at P5. It seemed like he could manage another good finish, help himself and the team on the standing with some points. However, the racing conditions in Istanbul were very difficult.

The race saw several spins during its course. Valtteri Bottas spun six times and Verstappen lost out on a podium finish as he failed to control his car under such conditions. Daniel Ricciardo could only manage a P10 finish himself.

Daniel Ricciardo was asked whether F1 could learn anything from Turkey. He said, “Look, don’t get me wrong, and I knew everyone sitting on the couch had a fun and exciting one to watch, but, I think to be honest, I don’t know if we learn anything from this weekend. It’s like why are we putting so much into these cars if we can’t actually push the limits?”

Daniel Ricciardo explains what such a track does to the competition

The race at Istanbul Park was entertaining. However, Ricciardo was skeptical of the benefits of a lower grip track. He explained teams spend a lot of money to build a fast race and failing to use that speed feels like a robbery.

He said, “We’ll probably never come to a situation like it again with this level of group. I think as well when teams are spending so much money developing cars and putting all the knowledge into designing the fastest race cars in the world, not being able to use them….if it was all the time, it would feel like a robbery.”

The Formula 1 chief Ross Brawn had a different point of view. He believes that Formula 1 benefitted from the circumstances at the Turkish Grand Prix. He explained the benefits of low grip track writing for his Formula 1 column.

He said, “I think drivers sometimes need to remember it’s a competition of who crosses the line first so while grip levels weren’t high, it was the same for everyone. Some drivers got their head down and came to terms with it, others found it a distraction.”

A P10 finish had Daniel Ricciardo fall down from P4 to P6 on the driver standings. Ricciardo is making a move from Renault to McLaren next season. However, the Australian will look forward to turning things around for him and the team at the next race weekend.
