Fernando Alonso is on Cloud 9 ever since he joined Aston Martin. Not only is he finding himself consistently taking the podium finishes but is also getting along well with Lance Stroll. That made for a surprising development given the scruffy relationships he’s shared with his prior teammates. As the Spaniard finally looks to be in a great mood after a long time, a former F1 champion chose him as his ideal teammate. While he believes it will be a lot of fun, he also revealed what would make Fernando not so happy once again.
Alonso faced quite a lot of issues with Alpine before he moved on to Aston Martin. He openly lashed out at them on the team radio when the car faced reliability issues. He also did not share the best of relationships with his teammate Esteban Ocon. Things with Lance Stroll turned out to be quite the opposite, though. Ever since his arrival, Fernando has showered praise on the Canadian. The duo even helps each other out during the race which again, is a surprising sight for Fernando fans.

After turning his retirement into a two-year hiatus, Alonso made a comeback with Alpine. His presence saw the team beat the likes of McLaren to the 4th spot in the constructors’ standings last year. However, being the perfectionist he is, the Asturian always demanded more from the team. While things at Aston Martin are not good enough to challenge Red Bull for the race wins, it is certainly enough to satiate his hunger for podiums for now.
Speaking on the Sky Sports F1 podcast recently, when asked who he’d pick from the current grid to be his teammate, Damon Hill chose Alonso. When the host, Matt Baker, asked him if it was because he was coaching Lance in the last couple of Grand Prix, Damon replied, “I think he’s ready to coach me but I think he would be hysterically funny because I know he’ll be cheeky. So, you’d have to have your wits about you if you’re going to be Fernando’s teammate.”
“I don’t know, he amuses me, he’s cunning and smart and funny. Probably wouldn’t be quite so funny if you’re beating him.

In the 5 races until now, Lance hasn’t managed to finish ahead of his teammate. In fact, when he had a chance to overtake Fernando during the Miami GP recently, he refused to do so. He even told his race engineer to tell Fernando to freely attack Lewis Hamilton because he wouldn’t make a move on him.
Alonso takes a dig at Esteban Ocon while praising Lance again
Lance’s refusal to attack Fernando was a gesture that the Spaniard appreciated a lot. He liked that the Canadian, unlike his previous teammate, prioritized the team’s result rather than his own. That, of course, was a backhanded comment at Ocon.

Speaking with Sky Sports, Alonso said, “Yes, I try to help Lance, but we cannot forget that also he’s very smart and he’s a driver that I think [of] as a team-mate, as we saw in Baku.”
“Last year I had, like, maybe the opposite. I had always my team-mate, like the first target was me. So that was obviously not beneficial for the team.”
