The 2023 Formula 1 season has been done and dusted. Not according to the race calendar, but for Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton. They have had no considerable improvement in the performance of their W14. And when that’s not happening, there is only a minimal amount that the drivers can extract from the car. In such a situation, the 7x champ has dejectedly given a glum statement to put his near future on the back burner.
The last year and a half has been nothing short of a major disappointment for Hamilton. Mercedes hasn’t been the best facilitator and Team Principal Toto Wolff has shifted the blame all around, including the budget cap. Even the Italian GP turned out to be tough for them, albeit securing a P5 and P6 in the end. With no major developments in sight for 2023, Hamilton has shifted focus to the next year’s championship.
Hamilton said he generally finds the races “pretty straightforward.” But, he explained that things aren’t as easy as before: “I’ve just got to do better in qualifying, so it’s not such a difficult day,” he said, as quoted by The Race. “And [it’s about] just living with the car that we have at the moment. [At Monza] it’s the third-fastest car and it’s obviously painful for all of us. We wish we were quicker. But we’re just counting down the days to February.”

Because the situation is dire, the Mercedes racer isn’t making noise for the right reasons. Nonetheless, a former World Champion has given his opinion in Hamilton’s favor.
Jacques Villeneuve gives his verdict on the Lewis Hamilton v/s Max Verstappen debate
Hands down, the battle between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton in 2021 will go down as the championship battle of the decade. And even in the history books of F1. That was the only time when the cars they raced were of equal strength. Since then, it has been Verstappen Red Bull’s reign. But if they were to drive equally developed cars in the future, former World Champion Jacques Villeneuve believes that the Briton will surely win.
Villeneuve said, as quoted by Express, “When Lewis is in a position, like Max is, where the car is his and it does everything he wants, he’s unbeatable. I’m not worried about that!”

So, there is no doubt that the 7-time champion is still capable of winning a World Championship. If the next year’s challenger is as quick as Red Bull’s, he might have a shot at redemption.
