Before the qualifying ended on Saturday, nobody knew that George Russell had been struggling with sickness for the past few weeks. However, he revealed after qualifying that perhaps him being sick was a good thing for his team. Since he had shown great speed through the weekend leading up to his P4 starting spot for Sunday.

Speaking during the post-qualifying interviews, Russell nonchalantly remarked, “I’ve been really ill the last two weeks, and I’ve been really quick, so maybe I need to be ill.” Little did he know that this offhand comment would turn into reality.

The race on Sunday unfolded as a testament to Russell’s resilience. Despite feeling sick for most of the race, as he revealed in a post-race interview, he maneuvered his Mercedes to a commendable P3 finish. The Abu Dhabi GP was not an easy race for the Brit, especially with Charles Leclerc’s brilliance in trying to help Sergio Perez thwart Mercedes’ P2 dreams.

However, Russell’s determination and Sir Lewis Hamilton‘s ninth-place finish secured crucial points for Mercedes. It allowed them to maintain their lead over Ferrari and clinch the second position in the constructor championship.

He told David Coulthard, I was probably coughing four times a lap, so it was pretty miserable out there. Which probably didn’t help things, but a massive relief to have brought the car home P3. It means a huge amount.”

“There are so many people back at the factory, Brackley, Brixworth, who have worked so hard to achieve this. It has been a really challenging season. I have let the side down a couple of times this year so pleased to bring it across the line,” Russell added. His performance garnered well-deserved praise from Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff, who told Sky Sports, “It was a great end for the fight for P2. George’s driving was exceptional.”

“There’s a lot of small things we’re changing with the car. I’ve seen it in the wind tunnel. We’ll be making some steps forward no doubt. But Red Bull are so far ahead at the moment, and they stopped development months ago, so they’re going to make a huge step again. But I’m confident we’ll be in a better place come Bahrain than we were in the last two years,” Russell explained.
